Ordering Healthy Start vitamin supplements
Vitamins are available to order from TPS Scotland, as well as pharmacy wholesalers, AAH Pharmaceuticals, Alliance Healthcare and Phoenix Medical Supplies.
Reclaiming the cost of vitamin supplements issued free to Healthy Start beneficiaries
Community Pharmacy Contractors and Dispensing Practices claiming reimbursement for vitamins should do this by submitting a CPUS form, which should be completed and returned to PSD with normal prescription returns.
Health Boards can sell them to non-beneficiaries for the following prices (which are inclusive of VAT):
Children drops: £2.31 per bottle
Women’s tablets: £1.14 per bottle
The regulations allowing this in Scotland are the National Health Service (Supply of Goods at Clinics etc.) (Scotland) Regulations 1976. (Note: the Provision of Healthy Start vitamins in Scotland is unaffected by the changes to the reorganisation of the health service in England. As a result, the Sale of Goods for Mothers and Children (Designation and Charging) Regulations 1976 continue to apply in Scotland. The Local Health Boards are therefore able to continue to sell the Healthy Start vitamins to those outside of the Healthy Start Scheme in Scotland.)
Community Pharmacies may also sell Healthy Start vitamins to non beneficiaries. However this is not covered by regulation and therefore Community Pharmacies can determine the selling price. However they will be aware that Health Boards can sell at the prices given above.
